Portraits of Success 2008

Stacey Sanders

Teacher, Rio Vista Community Day School

Kernville Union School District

Stacey Sanders is committed to changing the direction of every student that enrolls in Rio Vista CDS. She has been relentless in her endeavor to see that each of these children find self-worth, joy in attending school every day, value in learning, and a sense of family within our school. She collaborates with the regular program staff and high school staff to ensure that she is presenting the same high quality education and transition betweens schools is successful.

Mrs. Sanders makes the impossible possible. Each student that enrolls has a similar story…they were failing in school, parents didn't know what to do with them, each had lost hope in themselves and their journey. Last year, of the nine eighth grade students enrolled, at the end of our first year, eight would walk across the graduation stage. An event that not one parent or student even dared to dream could happen. For most families, this was the first generation to wear a cap and gown. Families responded by inviting grandma, aunt, neighbors. People came from out of state, there was standing room only for these eight who had lost hope… Until they met Mrs. Sanders who filled each child's heart with hope, pride in themselves, and a sense of worth for a job well done. Her unconditional respect for each child, her willingness to re-educate herself, to have faith on the most challenging of days, and to care when they make it hard to do so…she continues to be a "portrait of success".
